The dry corridor

A dangerous area

The dry corridor is a territorial extension that crosses almost all of Central America, from Chiapas to western Panama and western Costa Rica, passing through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

This area corresponds to the so-called dry tropical forest and the irregular rainfall, which is one of its main characteristics, makes it one of the areas of the planet most vulnerable to climate change. This phenomenon and its geographic location generate extreme conditions such as drought and tropical storms, both of which have devastating effects on local communities.

Central America has more than 45 million inhabitants, of which almost half live in rural areas. Fifty percent of its population is considered poor and twenty percent of this population is in extreme poverty. An important part of this population is involved in the production of basic grains and half of them live in the dry corridor.
